Welcome!
It is my privilege to serve this year as IEEE President and Chief Executive Officer.
With over 400,000 members in over 160 countries, IEEE is the world's largest professional society of applied technologists. We publish about 150 journals and magazines, sponsor or cosponsor about 1200 conferences each year, and have produced over 900 technical standards. We provide career-long education and professional development. We are a network of peers, and a voice for technology and our profession. For more information, please see our web site and our annual reports.
This is a milestone year for us. On January 1, 1963, IEEE was formed through the merger of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). So 2012 is IEEE's 50th year and I serve as IEEE's 50th President.
Approximately 9400 current IEEE members have been members continuously since the beginning. We will be honoring them this year and thanking them for their loyalty and their contributions to making IEEE the preminent organization it is today.
We are off to a good start. We began the year with a Board of Directors retreat and business meeing in Hong Kong, where we focused intently on understanding IEEE's presence in the Asia-Pacific region, what it is now and what we want it to be in the future. In February, the Board met in Phoenix to conduct regular business and to continue what I am sure will be a year-long effort to understand and begin to create the IEEE of the future.
