Welcome and Happy New Year!
It is my privilege to serve this year as IEEE President and Chief Executive Officer.
With over 400,000 members in over 160 countries, IEEE is the world's largest professional society of applied technologists. We publish about 150 journals and magazines, sponsor or cosponsor about 1200 conferences each year, and have produced over 900 technical standards. We provide career-long education and professional development. We are a network of peers, and a voice for technology and our profession. For more information, please see our web site and our annual reports.
This is a milestone year for us. On January 1, 1963, IEEE was formed through the merger of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). So 2012 is IEEE's 50th year and I serve as IEEE's 50th President.
Approximately 9400 current IEEE members have been members continuously since the beginning. We will be honoring them this year and thanking them for their loyalty and their contributions to making IEEE the preminent organization it is today.
Our motto, "Advancing Technology for Humanity," expresses our vision of IEEE's future. We provide the tools that engineers and scientists need to create technologies that will change the world, technologies that will provide an improved quality of life and greater prosperity for all.
With my very best wishes for 2012,
Gordon Day
